Dear Members,
We're rushing this special issue to "print" to tell you about the Health at Every Size summit, to be held along with this year's Convention (did you remember to register?), as well as two scholarships and an internship.  Lots of exciting new things are happening with NAAFA; come be a part of them!
2010 NAAFA Internship Opportunity
Are you an undergraduate or graduate student looking to gain experience and course credit working with the premier civil rights organization fighting size discrimination? NAAFA may be your answer. NAAFA is seeking to hire a college student interested in an internship to gain experience and course credit to work on strategic initiatives and activities.
 
Project Scope:
  • You will have the opportunity to assist the NAAFA Board in implementing two major activities, a HAES related event and the NAAFA National Convention to take place in August 2010 in the San Francisco Bay Area as part of their overall strategic plan.
  • An opportunity for exposure to many advocates and leaders in the size acceptance movement that would be relevant to your field of study.
  • An opportunity to write & publish articles for the NAAFA Newsletter
  • An opportunity to enhance your project management skills.
  • An opportunity to present a poster of your NAAFA project or applicable research.
Qualifications: 
  • Must complete your sophomore year of college by May 2010
  • Have a laptop computer, printer and a cell phone
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Available for regular conference calls
  • Demonstrated commitment to the size acceptance efforts and Health At Every Size tenets (through field of study, volunteer or other work efforts)
  • Ability to attend NAAFA activities in August 2010 
Logistical Details:
 
When: Internship duration is from early June to mid August 2010 (~10 weeks), 5-10 hours per week and 4 hours per day during HAES Event and National Convention
Where: You can work from home; however, you'll need to be in the San Francisco Bay Area August 4-9, 2010
What: You'll receive course credit, free registration to the HAES Event and the NAAFA National Convention, as well as a two-night stay at the hotel.
Other: You'll also receive certain supplies in order for you to work effectively: 
  • Office Supplies (Paper and Printer Cartridges as needed)
  • Reimbursement for phone calls and mileage (if applicable)

NAAFA to Award New HAES Scholarship

To help enable further study across a variety of disciplines that incorporate Health At Every Size (HAES) tenets and principles, NAAFA is offering a new HAES Scholarship to be awarded at their 2010 Convention being held at the Westin San Francisco Hotel in Millbrae, California, August 5-9, 2010.

 

Undergraduate or graduate students from accredited academic institutions, which utilize Health at Every Size tenets in their studies and research, are eligible to apply for the NAAFA HAES Scholarship.  Students interested in being considered for this scholarship can find complete details and an application at:

New Fashion Design Scholarship from NAAFA

In the hopes of encouraging fashion design students to focus their efforts on designing clothing for the plus size figure, NAAFA is offering a new Plus-Size Fashion Design Scholarship to be awarded at their 2010 Convention being held at the Westin San Francisco Hotel in Millbrae, California, August 5-9, 2010.

 

Students currently enrolled in an accredited Fashion Design School are eligible to apply for the NAAFA Plus-Size Fashion Design Scholarship.  Designers interested in being considered for this scholarship can find complete details and an application at: http://www.naafaonline.com/convention2010/schedule/scholarship.html

NAAFA Announces Health At Every Size (HAES) Summit
In keeping with NAAFA's ongoing commitment to eliminate size discrimination and in response to inquiries focused on health concerns, The NAAFA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the first NAAFA Health At Every Size (HAES) Summit to be held at the Westin San Francisco Airport Hotel on Monday, August 9, 2010.
 
The NAAFA HAES Summit Objectives are:
  • To bridge Health At Every Size (HAES) work that supports NAAFA's civil rights efforts
  • To provide a supportive venue to bring together various individuals across disciplines to present and discuss their work and latest findings.
  • To award a scholarship to a promising undergraduate or graduate student whose studies and research are focused on or embodies the HAES tenets. 
The Summit content will include:
  • Engaging keynote speakers
  • Affinity Table and networking format during lunch
  • Panel Sessions on cutting edge topics from experts
  • Evening Reception & Poster Session
Registration Fee Structure:
 
Professionals: $150.00
         Day of: $175.00
Students: $75.00 (limited to spots available, student ID required)
   Day of: $100.00
